Who Wants to Tell Her?

I was flipping through the latest issue of Us Weekly and saw a picture of Whitney Port, with a caption quoting her as saying that manicures and pedicures are her "guilty pleasures". Somebody needs to tell her that that isn't what a guilty pleasure is. If it is, then so is having your oil changed and going to the dentist.

No, a mani-pedi can be viewed as an indulgence.  If you have crappy nail beds and an inability to polish your nails without getting it all over yourself, it can also be part of your routine maintenance. It is not a guilty pleasure. A guilty pleasure is something you hesitate to admit enjoying because you risk embarrassment and ridicule. It is often something you do when by yourself in the privacy of your home or car. Or, if you're Jessica Simpson, it's something you do publicly and discuss in a nationally televised interview.

Examples? I'll go first:

1. I have an unhealthy devotion to ABBA. I like to sing their songs in my car. Loudly. Also, I went through a phase where I watched Muriel's Wedding thrice weekly, and I cannot stop myself from watching Mamma Mia despite knowing it's horrible.
2. If Don't Tell Mom the Babysitter's Dead comes on HBO, I have to watch.
3. I enjoy watching marathons of Snapped on the Oxygen channel. Steve: "I'm so pleased you enjoy watching a TV show about women who kill their men."
4. If I'm flipping through the channels and find a stand-up comedian, I'm watching. Until Steve finds me and makes me change the channel because "this isn't funny."
5. For every dozen cookies I bake, I eat at least one cookie's worth of dough.
6. I love old game shows from the 80s, especially Press Your Luck.

No whammies!

Ok, your turn. It's ok, you're among friends in the Trust Tree. We don't have secrets and we don't judge in the Trust Tree.

1 comment:

  1. A) If I ever see Don't Tell Mom the Babysitter's Dead on TV, you better believe everything else will be DVR'd while I watch that. LOVE that movie!

    B) My guilty pleasure is that I play Press Your Luck online when I'm bored at work. Not kidding.
